What is Algae (Seaweed) Extract?

Great for: Cell regeneration and reducing the appearance of fine lines

How it works: Algae extract is an emollient and film former used to increase the skin’s moisture level to bring suppleness and firmness to the skin. It works as an antioxidant helps to reduce fine lines and wrinkles and with tissue renewal.

Beyond a typical emollient, algae extract is said to stimulate and strengthen the skin’s collagen and have higher moisturizing benefits at lower levels. Algae extract is naturally rich in vitamins and minerals including B12 and C.

Where does Algae (Seaweed) Extract Come From?

There are a wide variety of algae and seaweeds, but all are rich in vitamins, minerals, and various trace elements. Algae extracts can come from many sources including red algae, blue-green algae, brown algae, seaweed, and sea kelp.  Many commercial manufacturers don’t share the exact type of algae used and maintain it is part of the product’s “special” powers.

The most obvious example is Le Mer’s Crème de la Mer which uses fermented sea kelp as the vital ingredient in its “miracle broth.”
