3-Ingredient DIY Beet Powder Lip & Cheek Stain

Audrey Hepburn once said, “I believe in pink, and I believe in lipstick” and she was totally right; a bold, statement lip can give you a boost of confidence on even the dreariest of days. Putting a pop of color into your beauty routine changes your whole attitude, even if you’re not wearing any other kind of makeup.

But the bummer news is that most store-bought lipsticks have tons of potentially harmful chemicals (Spoiler alert! Many lipsticks contain LEAD! Yikes!) and waxy by-products in them that may be harmful if you wear them every day. You have to be super careful about what cosmetics you put on your lips because no matter what, you’re going to end up ingesting some of the product through your mouth.

This easy 3-ingredient DIY lip stain is a total game changer. First, it’s completely safe to ingest! You can put it on your lips and skin without worry whatsoever. Second, it’s like having a custom formulated color just for you! By playing with a few natural ingredients you can easily find at the grocery store, you can adjust the color to complement your specific skin tone. Third, this stain is actually a nourishing lip and skin treatment as well as a beauty product since the shea butter and coconut oil moisturize areas prone to wrinkles. You can even use it on your cheeks as a kind of subtle cream blush- that’s what we call double duty beauty!

The main ingredient that gives this lip and cheek stain its color is beet root powder. You can find get beet root powder in a jar, sometimes even in powder form, in natural grocery stores! If you want to adjust the color a bit, you can add blue tones with blueberry powder. yellow tones with turmeric powder (a little goes a LONG way), or to darken and add a rich brown hue you can add cocoa powder! Beet powder may look very dark, but the color is actually very subtle and natural on the skin.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 Tbsp Coconut oil
  • 1/2 Tbsp Shea butter
  • 1/2 tsp Beet root powder adjust for color as desired

Instructions

  1. Put oil and shea butter in a small glass container or measuring cup. Heat about 1 inch of water over the stove on med-low heat, then place the glass measuring cup on top, creating a “double boiler” effect until the oil and shea butter have melted. You can also microwave on short 15 second bursts until oils are both melted. Takes around 35 seconds.

  2. Remove from heat and stir in beet root powder. Add turmeric or cocoa powder for color, as desired. Put mixture into small jar and allow to cool. (Those little salad dressing mason jars are great for this!)
  3. Pour oil and beet powder mixture through a coffee filter with an additional container to catch the oil mixture. If it doesn't travel through the filter naturally, use your hands to squeeze the oil through. This keeps the lip gloss from feeling too grainy.

  4. Let cool on the countertop for a few hours until the melted oils harden. Store in cool, dry area and use whenever as a natural lip and cheek stain!
