Natural Beauty Founders Share How They Overcome Their Biggest Challenges

Nothing worth doing has ever been easy. Without a doubt, you can add starting a natural beauty company to that list. From finding the energy and money to compete with the big brands to tuning out noise from critics to wading through hard-to-understand regulations, beauty entrepreneurs see a seemingly endless stream of daily challenges.

Luckily, natural beauty is filled with authentic and passionate leaders who are willing to be upfront and honest about these challenges.

Below, some of my favorite and most inspirational beauty founders share some of their struggles and what keeps them motivated when things feel especially tough.

What is a challenge you’ve faced as a natural beauty founder?

Most people trust the conventional products and big brands that have been developed successfully for many years. It’s quite challenging to change their mind and convince them to make the switch to natural products. We do our best and struggle in the natural beauty space, and it’s always important spread the message about benefits and efficacy of natural beauty especially in their skin and health aspects. I believe more people will give it a try on natural skincare when they are willing to take the first step to know more about natural and cruelty-free beauty.

Besides, there are many natural beauty brands and products that are similar in natural beauty market. I found particularly challenging is how to stand out and get noticed by your target audience. We have to be passionate, creative, and specific. I also enjoy engaging with our audience and providing excellent customer service for them. It helps create a warm community for your customers.

What keeps you going?

Passion and persistence. If you want it, just work for it, it’s that simple! I know we may have hard times, difficulties and challenges, every time you want to give up, remember why you started. Passion and persistence will finally bring you to where you desire! Do what you love! Believe in YOU!

If you could share one piece of advice with someone interested in starting a career or business related to natural beauty, what would you tell them?

You have to work very hard and have professional skincare knowledge to start your business because it can help you overcome not all but many challenges (e.g. formulation, products, questions from customers) all the time. Starting a career or business related to natural beauty is not easy, but your hard work and professional knowledge makes it less difficult and makes you more confident to deal with it. I would also suggest you to start your brand with a specific niche that is different from many similar brands. It will be one of the first few steps to make people pay attention to your brand. You may start off small, but dream big!

What is a challenge you’ve faced as a natural beauty founder?
When it comes to plant-based beauty, you ultimately think very simple when it comes to the products, recipes and sharing them with your audience, but there are also many rules and regulations that come along with it that I struggled with. There are tons of great resources for those who want to start a business, but many of us have no clue they exist. It seemed like every day I was uncovering a new product labeling requirement and it became overwhelming. It was a time I know that I wanted to stay true to my brand but also follow the rules, which added on a little bit of extra work.

What keeps you going?

My readers and other women who I’ve never even met who have this desire for plant-based beauty care keep me going. It makes all of the extra work very much worth it. When I get an email from someone who tried our herbal hair tonic and had no idea that herbs could improve the health of their hair or skin, that’s when the light bulb goes off. It keeps my positive energy flowing.

If you could share one piece of advice with someone interested in starting a career or business related to natural beauty, what would you tell them?
Make sure you do your research before you launch your product. Among many things, you’ll want to learn your market and what values you have as a company/organization. Stay true to those values and don’t let rules and regulations overwhelm you. You can do this. Just one step at a time.

What is a challenge you’ve faced as a natural beauty founder?

I think one of the many hurdles I’ve faced when starting my clean beauty and wellness business was really learning how to push through all the noise of disappointments, distractions, and fear.  A good example would be when people would come to me and say that natural and holistic beauty is completely ineffective and that it’s nothing more than just a passing trend.  Learning how to rise above that, staying completely true to myself, and pushing through was a challenge that I had to learn how to overcome.  I’m still learning to do this even now.

What keeps you going?
It’s hope. Hope that by sharing my personal experiences would help and inspire others to make even the smallest change in the way they care for themselves as a whole—in mind, body, and soul.

If you could share one piece of advice with someone interested in starting a career or business related to natural beauty, what would you tell them?
Distractions, disappointments, and fear keep us from reaching higher. Learn to push through and rise above all the noise.  No matter what challenges you’re up against, learn to not let it consume you or prevent you from doing what you’re truly passionate about.

What is a challenge you’ve faced as a natural beauty founder?

I mainly face challenges such as “overhead” and/or money to buy supplies for my booming small business. I work 40 hours a week and it’s a total challenge for me. Everyone talks about being a “Boss Babe” but they leave out the sacrifices and the “I need new shoes” testimony. Often, I want to cry and scream, but I then I realize how important it is for me to keep on trucking because I know my business is my purpose. I’ve come too far on this entrepreneur journey to fail or to give up due to overhead challenges or time restraint.

What keeps you going?

I’m blessed beyond measure for my tribe and my fan base because they keep me motivated to finish the race.

If you could share one piece of advice with someone interested in starting a career or business related to natural beauty, what would you tell them?

I’d tell them to keep the faith! Sounds cliché but it’s a fact. If you don’t believe in your brand, who will? Ask for help from other’s if necessary but you do not give up! Entrepreneurship can be very difficult, but the reward is so worth it.
